About this collection
Kangaroo Art Prints: Australia, Photographed at Home
A kangaroo art print is about as Australian as a wall can get — and these ones are Australian the whole way through. Australian animals, photographed in Australia by Australian artists, printed and finished here in Australia. Three works, which is a small collection, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
The Kangaroo Silhouette
Ask anyone anywhere in the world to draw an Australian animal and you will get the kangaroo silhouette: the heavy tail low to the ground, the long back feet, the forward lean, the ears up and turned. It is one of the few outlines a whole country is recognised by.
There is a reason we see it as a shape more often than as a face. Kangaroos are at their most active in the soft hours — early morning and late afternoon into dusk — which is exactly when the light sits low and behind them. Watch a mob move across a paddock at that hour and they stop being animals and become a line of shapes against the glare, which is precisely what Andre Rerekura has caught in The Silhouette. Andre is an Indigenous filmmaker and underwater cinematographer who works across the Western Australian coast, and his eye for shape and light carries straight from the water onto land.
Boomers, Jacks and the Quiet Life of a Mob
The big males — boomers, or jacks — are the ones that stop a conversation. Standing tall on the tripod of two feet and a tail, forearms heavy, they are considerably larger than the females and will spar with each other in short, sharp bouts that look like boxing and are essentially a negotiation over rank.
Jake Wilton's two pieces here sit either side of that. The Scrap takes the confrontation; The Jack takes the animal alone. Jake is better known for his work underwater, and there is something of that patience in how he photographs on land — close, unhurried, and waiting for the animal to forget he is there.
Australian Wildlife Art, Made in Australia
If you are looking for kangaroo wall art in Australia, the provenance is the part worth checking. Every piece here is a limited edition, printed to order and handmade in Australia on fine art paper or museum grade canvas, and arrives with its certificate of authenticity. 30% of profits from every print goes to the conservation causes we support. Nothing is warehoused and nothing is mass produced — your print is made after you order it, for you.
Look at all three together: The Silhouette by Andre Rerekura, then The Scrap and The Jack by Jake Wilton. They hang extremely well as a set of three. On each product page, use View in room to place the work at true scale on your own wall before you settle on a size, and remember that any Extra Large or larger order comes with a complimentary small print of your choosing — often the simplest way to turn one piece into a wall. For more of the country above the waterline, Land is the place to go next, Beach for the coast, and Gallery for everything we hold.
