From Brooke Pyke: Over a shallow reef on the Ningaloo a leopard shark moves elegantly, the sunbeams dance around it and make reflections on the sand.
The leopard shark (Stegostoma tigrinum) swimming above spots of corals in the Ningaloo reef, caught on camera in a bird’s eye view by Brooke Pyke. This picture is a resplendent blend of the majestic and docile shark along with the growing corals accentuated by the refraction of light on the sea bed, which in turn, creates amazing and complementary shadows.
Much has been said about the name of this shark, as it is called different names depending on location. It has been called a zebra shark due to the stripe-y pattern of the young sharks. The stripe pattern serves as a sort of defence against predators, a mimicry of the patterns of poisonous snakes. Even the species name ‘tigrinum’ was actually changed to ‘fasciatum’ and back to ‘tigrinum’ and retained until the present day. Tigrinum is in reference to the zebra/tiger-like patterns of the young.
